7 tips to reduce ink in packaging printing

7 tips to reduce ink in packaging printing
1:53

Reducing ink usage in printing your packaging can be beneficial both economically and environmentally.

Here are some tips to achieve this:

1. Opt for thinner fonts

Thinner fonts require less ink for printing. Choose fonts that remain readable while being lighter.

2. Optimise layout

Efficiently organise your graphical elements on the page to minimise the printed surface.

3. Use grayscale images

If possible, consider printing images in grayscale rather than color. This will reduce ink consumption without significantly compromising visual quality.

4. Adapt the printing substrate

Use a substrate designed to absorb less ink. For example, in flexography, a more absorbent paper requires a larger ink deposit. Therefore, the more coated the paper, the lower the ink deposit.

5. Reduce packaging size

If feasible, consider reducing the size of the packaging itself. This can not only reduce ink consumption but also contribute to material savings.

6. Avoid solid backgrounds

Solid backgrounds require more ink. Opt for halftone backgrounds or use light patterns to reduce ink consumption.

7. Conduct trials and adjustments

Before mass printing, conduct trials to adjust settings and find the best balance between print quality and ink consumption.

Next step

To further reduce ink usage significantly without compromising visual quality, it's essential to find a balance that aligns with your brand's graphic standards and identity.

For personalised guidance in finding the best combination for your business, consider conducting a feasibility study with a packaging specialist who can provide tailored advice and help avoid hasty decisions.
